Turning Red Review

It’s not escaped my feeds in the barely week since its release, but in the event others were as on the fence about watching as I was Turning Red was a surprisingly good movie.

I say surprising not because a movie about puberty mixed with the antics of turning into a red panda lacks an ability to be good, but because of the combination of what such a movie would require to be good, and what the large studios have convinced themselves is worth turning out.

That amount of skepticism is perhaps validated by the fact that this movie’s own trailer brought up the title of the studio that brought you Inside Out and Incredibles, both of which are fundamentally better movies, albeit, with similar themes.

The movie has its charms, its cuteness, and a good mix of the silly and the serious. I simply don’t expect to hear and sort quotes from it, and certainly don’t expect any sort of “where is my super suit” jokes to be in a workplace 20 some years after the movie release, as Incredibles managed to do some weeks ago. The movie is not without its plot holes most of them forgive, or expect given we are dealing with middle schools.

But I'm still sure what would make a teenage girl despite the ability to become a Red Panda for nearly half the movie. Nonetheless, overall Turning Red is a silly charming movie covering a number of issues long worth covering.
