“Dad? Mom?! Can I keep this?” Jaylee asked.

“Where did you get that, sweetheart?” Her mother asked.

“It was on the shore,” Jaylee said, as proudly as a 5 year old says everything.”It looks like a dragon, and I wanna take it home.”

“Well then we’ll just have to take it with us now, won’t we?” Jaylee’s dad replied.

---10 years later---

“It’s coming with us.” Jaylee said.

“It’s just a log, sweetie.” Jaylee's dad replied.

“Like this is just a job? Like this is just a house?!” Jaylee asked. “What’s next then?! Am I just a daughter?!”

“You know she is right, dear.” Jaylee’s mom replied. “Maybe it is just driftwood but it mean a lot to her.”

"Doesn't mean I like it,” Jaylee's dad said. “Fine it’s coming”

---another 10 year later---

Jaylee yawns, adjusting that old piece of driftwood she found before checking under the bed. “You doing okay under there?”

There’s a low growl and some bright eyes before a tail is heard flapping on the carpet.

“You got enough food?” Jaylee asked, and giggled as a strong puff of smoke came out. “Okay then.”
A few growls came out as Jaylee let the sheets drop.

“What?” Jaylee asked. Lifting the covers, and listening close. “It's just you and me, Drifter. No one is ever going to tell you have to leave me. Ever again.”

“Love you too, my little champion.” And with that she went to sleep.
