Rabbit Hole Carnival: Wolves

“Welcome to the Rabbit Hole Carnival. What drink will be your festival?” Renee asked.

“Don’t you ever get tired of that?” A man asked.

“I… I’m sorry?” Renee asked.

“Aren't you tired of life, and doing the same old question?” He asked.

Renee signed. “No. No, I'm not. I used to be like that, but I moved on and decided to be a better person.”

“And where has that gotten you?” the man asked.

“Your order, sir?”  Renee asked.

There was a long pause before he spoke. “White owl.”

“Have you ever heard the stories of the two wolves? Mister?” Renee said.

“Jared..” Jared replied. “And no. what is the story?”

“Two wolves are inside you” Renee began. “One produced hope. And is loud and keeps barking at every little warning sign. And listen when you choose to stop yourself and show up at a bar your uncle owns. Appear out of nowhere ready to take on the world.”

“And the other wolf?” Jared asked.

“Void. or Hallow.” Renee said. “As many call him anyways. And he just eats. Just let you sink in and take more than he gives.”

“Just gives up,” Jared said, “and eats and eats until there is nothing left.”

  “Quite so.” Renee replied. “Just hide up in the room, and just… well yields.”

“And then just shows up at a bar and then wants to drag it all down with them.” Jared said.

“No,” Renee replied. “That still other wolf.”

“It is?” Jared said. 

“You came in here didn’t you? You reached and tried to get some help” Renee said, “And that more than most ever do”

“And the others?” Jared said.

“The others don’t come…” Renee said. “They gave up. They left it all behind a while back. And do not seem to have an interest in being better.”

“And which one am I then?” Jared said.

“You need to answer that yourself.” Renee replied. “That’s not something I can answer for you.”

“Hmm… well I’m glad I stumbled in here then” Jared said.

“Most people are.” Renee said.

“Most?” Jared replied.

“How are you supposed to help those who won’t help themselves?” Renee asked. “How are you going to change things that don’t wish to be changed?”

“I want to though…” Jared said.

By going to a bar and asking people if they are tired of it all?” Renee asked.

“That story of yours?” the one with two wolves?” Jared asked.

“What about it?” Renee replied.

“Which one wins?” Jared replied, taking a swig.

“The one you feed, Jared.” Renee said. “ The wolf that wins is the one you feed.”
