Renee played around with the mugs. “Welcome to the Rabbit Hole Carnival! What drink will be your festival?... oh

“Still that boring hun? Nick asked as he walked back in. “Weren’t you trying to recharge anyways?

“Yes, and I did… I think anyway..” Renee said. “Now I'm bored…. And worried.”

“Well that’s first. What are you worried about?” Nick asked.

“What  if I am the problem? Renee asked. “What if it's just me?”

“So your talk with Adam didn’t go well either?” Nick asked.

“Oh he didn’t show up.” Renee replied. “I told him if he wasn’t gonna at least hear me out not to bother, so I guess he listened at least…. For once.”

“Renee?” Nick asked. “Why did you say that?”

“What, in the entirety of this bar do you mean?!” Renee asked. “Because you taught me that! Because you told me that you need to be comfortable with yourself!”

“Did I now?” Nick asked. “Funny, I don't remember ever using those words.”

“Do you have a point here?” Renee said. “No, you didn’t use those words, but you acted like it. You didn’t say you were tired of Mike, but you tried to produce something better.”

“Am I the one who needs to have a point here, or are you? Nick asked. “Mike always did leave a mess. He was always the one to just never really see what was around him.”

“Including me I suppose.” Renee mumbled.

“Including you, indeed.” Nick said, “You still walked in here didn’t you?”

“Yeah…” Renee said. “That doesn’t make it hurt any less.”

“I suppose it wouldn’t.” Nick replied. “That doesn’t change that you came. Reached out, and stumbled up in here. And Told Adam you were staying unless he has something worthwhile to say.”

“Yeah…” Renee said. “Yeah, and apparently he didn’t.”

“Apparently not.” Nick said. “He certainly could have at least come if he did.”

“Or replied to a text!” Renee said. “Even a I'm not coming then would’ve meant something.’”

“But they ignored both. Same as always.” Nick said.

“You knew them….” Renee said. When you said?”

 “When I said that I’d let you try, and you won't be upset when you're sad?” Nick asked. “I very much meant it. Honestly, I thought he'd yell at you, but it seems to much of a coward to make even that happen.”

“No, that’s not accurate.. I don’t think.” Renee said. “He’s always been a peacekeeper and family first person.”

“Are you expecting him tomorrow then?” Nick asked.

“A couple days from now.” Renee replied. “With some story and some plea deal, and a tale he already knows I won’t believe.”

“Can I just keep him out then?” Nick said.

“No.” Renee replied. “ Let’s just share some drinks tonight.”

“You need to make your own then.” Nick replied. “I’ll make myself a Five hunters.”

Renee made herself a Shocking Apple Nick made a Five hunters. And both chugged their drinks now.
“Is there a particular reason you wanna tell Adam yourself?” Nick asked.

“Closure.” Renee replied. “I wanna be the one who closes this chapter.”

“A better reason than most ever have.” Nick said.
