Crash Bandicoot: It's About Time review

If all you wanted this year was a Crash Bandicoot game, it works. Which is not to dis the game, it was a decent distraction with well-developed characters, level designs, plot, etc. Crash Bandicoot has always been a good platformer with a good balance of self imposed difficulty. I have lost interest in torturing myself to grab a few extra collectibles, but then I was never much of a completionist to begin with. I am not, however, past chugging a few beers, and failing to time a jump I totally made, and I don’t intend to be anytime soon. We all escape life in our own ways, after all. Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time is, largely, what we expected. A new Crash Bandicoot game. A solid story, and a good mix of Crash 1 and 3. Some things don’t change even with it being released in 2020, and to some perhaps that’s comforting. As a gamer, the latest addition to the Bandicoot family is worth considering.

As a writer and world builder, I would’ve been happier with a different game. While optional the side level drew me in the most, and were the most consistent distraction keeping me from finishing the game. Interesting as were, however, these levels often felt out of place, or better off as a part of their own game. There more to add to the sense of craziness, and the idea that you’re not alone this time than for their own inclusion. Which doesn’t add much when each side character only helps out two to three times, sometimes without even meaning to. And can drop the immersion with how out of place some of these weapons are, and how interesting a pirate Tawna game could be.

None of this stopped me from enjoying the game, but it’s something to be prepared for, if, like me, you burned yourself out on the Spyro Trilogy, and N. Sanity Trilogy also released recently. I doubt this will be anyone’s favorite Bandicoot, but it’s still worth getting.
